Shop with a Cop Fremont Michigan
Shop with a Cop Fremont Michigan is an annual event put on by the Fremont Police Department. The purpose of the Shop with a Cop event is to create a positive relationships between youth and officers. Young kids are selected each year based on need to shop at the Fremont Walmart to purchase gifts for their family and maybe a gift or two for themselves.
Fremont and Surrounding Communities
The Shop with a Cop in the Fremont area is more than just one department. Surrounding communities and departments come together to make this event memorable for the kids and their families. They are the Newaygo Police Department, Fremont Police Department, Grant Police Department, White Cloud Police Department, Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police – Hart Post, Oceana County Sheriff’s Department and Gratiot County Sheriff’s Department.
This year the Shop with a Cop event helped over 110 kids, providing them around $150.00 each to spend on their family Christmas.
The act of giving
The act of giving is where it is at. The Fremont Police Department heads up this event with Officer Curtis Franks at the helm. He reaches out to local businesses, organizations and people to raise the money to fund this event.
Producer Duane Weed while creating this segment saw many aspects of the program:
- The kids finding that special gift for a family member. One young boy was shopping for PJ’s for his mom.
- The kids that were looking for gifts for Grandparents and even one was looking for their pet.
- The officers were into this big time. Giving of their advice and helping the kids find the gifts they needed.
